  1. Senior Thesis: Sentiment Toward Women-of-Color in Fashion Advertisements

The aim of this quantitative research study was to use the Grounded Theory method, the concept of polysemy, dissociative reference groups and Whiteness Theory to investigate how consumers form their preferences about products and advertisements where- for comparison- the endorsers are of different ethnicities. A convenience sample of 100 women shoppers within the US were given a 25-item semantic differential scale survey via the Amazon Mechanical Turk (M-Turk) tool. Given in two-parts, the first advertisement shown in the survey included an African American endorser and the second advertisement (that was virtually identical) included a Caucasian endorser. Respondents answered the same 25-items after viewing each ad. The findings did not show a significant difference in consumer preference toward either ad.
